Hi! Surprise! Special mini post here on all things Met Gala! Below, find my general thoughts on the evening, best dressed, needs some work, and dream themes.
General Thoughts:
I actually loved this year’s theme! I feel like many celebs captured it quite well (kudos to the designers!) and looked sophisticated and stylish. Personally, I wish celebs dressed in more colour because as the night went on, a trend formed: grays, whites, and blacks. I understand that that is the traditional suit but come on people! Play around a little! I’m happy that the carpet was at least colourful (I lovedddd the blue with flowers this year!).
I also definitely agree with what Tyrone Edwards said on The Social:
“I’m not sure a lot of people understood the assignment or at least they shied away from it…and I saw that with the answers in the interviews…The designers did the work and did the research but the people who were wearing [the] [clothes] [didn’t]. They’d answer the question, ‘why did you wear this?’, and say ‘cause I wanted to be comfortable.’ We wanna hear black…[and] dandyism!”
This is such a necessary criticism for a theme like this. While I didn’t fully watch the show, I can definitely see many celebrities shying away from true answers. I think they didn’t note how they honoured many black icons and dandyism because they were ‘scared of saying the wrong thing’. This isn’t the time! We cannot be performative when we are honouring other cultures. We must do the research and be proud of what we are wearing and the influences the outfit comes from!
Top 5 Best Dressed:
Disclaimer: choosing five was soooo hard but I didn’t want this article to go on forever! Alas, I chose based on the outfit itself, how the outfit honoured black icons and/or dandyism, and what I think I’ll remember in 5 years (i.e., Gigi Hadid’s supersized puffer or any of Rihanna’s looks). These are in no particular order!!
My goodness I loved this. She’s such an icon. And her kids and grandkids’ names were on the underside of the train (crying it’s so cute).
I mean… YES! Chic, fun, different, and totally her colour. FEMPIRE lovesssss.
Thisss is so classy yet so fresh, I’m obsessed.
Colour!!! Yes!!! Loved this.
Doechii seriously slayed the house boots down (i’m deceased). This was everything I wanted and more. So fresh yet soooo classy and timeless. Ugh! Obsessed!
One more for the Queen of the Met! I mean come on, so good. My only criticism is someone wore something quite identical (hat and everything!), but I still love it.
Honourary Mentions: Chappell Roan, Kylie Jenner, Sofia Richie, & Colman Domingo.
What was your favourite Met look this year? Favourite ever?
Needs Some Work:
My biggest notes for this year’s Met is the lack of colour and originality. I don’t want to be an absolute hater and put celebrities’ photos in here cause I think that’s a little far, but I found some celebrities (*cough cough* names rhyming with bailey leeber and rendal rawrdashian) wore your everyday red carpet outfit! They were bland (muted neutrals) and lacked anything that made it unique or stand out. The Met is made to push the boundaries of fashion, so it really irks me when people don’t try something new and fresh! Personally, I think it’s better to try and potentially fail than play it safe. Let me show up in some colour and risk-taking outfits! (Anna, are you listening?)
Dream Met Themes:
I saw a Tik Tok earlier about Met Gala themes that have never been done (but should!) and I can’t stop thinking about it! Here are some dream themes:
Space! Give me all the galactic fashion you can.
Something simple like shoes or hats - I’d love to see how people dress with such a simple theme!
A broader ‘In Memoriam’ and see who stars dedicate their outfit too.
Something that forces people to wear colour, like rainbow or monochromatic lol!
That’s all from me today! Read the rest of my Met Gala thoughts (like RiRi’s pregnancy reveal) on buzzing this Sunday! Until then,
stay sunny, chlo ☼
