The Buzz #10:
Long Live Pop Girl Summer
All hail pop girl summer. After a dry spell of new music (except for Mayhem & What Was That, I’d never hate you), we finally have to music soundtrack our SPF-slathered lives. Let me just say, i’ve been dying for something to jam to on the beach.
Let’s begin with last year’s song-of-the-summer queen reclaiming her throne. Sabrina Carpenter dropped Manchild on Thursday, and phew, it hits. Think Good Luck Babe energy with disco synth-y, double entendre galore and dare i say… a hint of a country twang… Sabrina’s back to reclaim her title. It’s nothing revolutionary (Sabrina even said she wrote this during her Short N Sweet sessions), but it works. And just like Espresso last summer, she timed the release perfectly with festival season so she has something new to promote at all her summer shows. Give it up for Sabrina’s marketing team!
Also, Barry Keoghan is off in Beatles camp for his upcoming biopic so he can’t even hear that “this one is about you.” LOL! I love chaotic Sabrina!
On a similar pop wavelength, Addison Rae also blessed us with her debut album, Addison. Now I’ve said this before (quote me here), and I’ll say it again for all the haters who just aren’t listening: Addison Rae is the next pop star.
With a flawless 5/5 single run, this album did not disappoint. While I’m no music critic, I know that Addison is bringing something new to pop - it’s sultry, it’s sweet, it’s hypnotizing, and unexpected. As one of my favourite TikToker describes it, “it’s almost like a moodboard of all these amazing artists from Britney Spears to Lana Del Rey to Madonna, and puts it into this special place that is uniquely Addison.” If you had told me in 2020 that Addison Rae was going to release a fully developed, critically compelling pop album, I’d have laughed. And now? I’m streaming it on repeat.
There are whispers she might even join Chappell Roan on tour (after Chappell used one of her songs in a promo post.) Who knows? But I’m here for it. Long live pop girl summer!!
Kylie Jenner’s Transparency Era
Kylie Jenner is suddenly real, and it’s such a breath of fresh air.
Recently, a TikToker asked her via a TikTok video about her (very good) boob job, and instead of brushing it off, Kylie commented, "445 cc, moderate profile, half under the muscle!!!!! silicone!!! garth fisher!!! hope this helps lol" Like hello?? Talk about transparency! She even went on to comment on Garth Fisher’s appreciation post for Kylie’s shoutout, telling fans how amazing he is as a surgeon.
Similarly, Kylie posted a (chaotic but appreciated) hair tutorial on how she gets her voluminous waves, showcasing the add-in extensions, the curling technique, etc. And with her recent Knicks appearances with beau Timothee Chalamet, she’s giving main character realness. Taking digital cam pics, yelling at the game, and even showing her Knicks-coloured lingerie. It feels like a whole new Kylie.
Now here’s my theory: I think it’s the relationship. Ever since she started dating Timothée, her vibe has totally shifted (in the best way). Before him, everything felt calculated, filtered, and behind closed doors (remember the lip-liner-lying era?!). Now she’s walking around NYC with minimal security, posting authentic videos, and showing her love publicly and proudly.
And while I’m not saying you should change for a man, sometimes love reveals parts of yourself you hadn’t tapped into before. Timothée grew up in a relatively normal world compared to Kylie’s fame bubble, and I really think he’s showing her what it’s like to live a more grounded, present life. And honestly? I’m so here for this authentic Kylie. I never thought I’d say this…but Kylie might be my favourite Kardashian now. (!!)
Close Enough, Welcome Back Fleetwood Mac
Two of my favourite artists, Ashe & Finneas, started a band, The Favors, with an album coming out in September… and i screamed!!!
The pair have worked together in the past, for their masterpiece Til Forever Falls Apart, and have had a close relationship ever since. Now they’ve lowkey been teasing some sort of collab for months, but a whole ass band and album?!?! Did not expect it. And yes, the single A Little Mess You Made is just as amazing as I knew it would be. It delivers so much musical tension and lyricism that you’d expect from the two pop poet powerhouses, and something about songs where they argue with each other… it just totally hits.
The internet is spiralling in the best way too, comparing the pair to Fleetwood Mac and Daisy Jones & The Six. While no, this is not a secret love affair/break-up album as both of these individuals are happily in relationships, I just know the music will be as good as these respective bands.
Fan edits are going crazy online, so I’ve rounded up some of my favourites.
Apparently Netflix Has A Festival Now?
I am a trailer fanatic. Sometimes when I’m bored, I just watch trailer compilations on YouTube and get so excited for what’s coming out. Apparently, Netflix has a festival now to announce their upcoming projects, and I am sat.
Highlights:
Stranger Things 5 is officially coming, split across three holiday dates later this year. The trailer gives us literally 15 seconds of new content, but I’m still sooo excited. Just don’t kill Steve… please?
Lady Gaga performed Bloody Mary to announce she’s joining Wednesday Season 2. Lady Gaga can really do anything, I’m sat.
Squid Games 3 is on the way if you’re into psychological chaos, LOL.
Happy Gilmore 2 with all the originals plus some new faces (hello Travis Kelce!!).
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery drops in December and I'm already planning a watch party.
Not Netflix but Wicked: For Good trailer also dropped this week and wow. The set design, the costumes, the teaser of Act II’s songs… give them the Oscar already.

3 things that made me happy this week:
relaxation facials with my mama
beach days
summer nights!
stay sunny, chlo ☼
My favorite moment from last week was Edmonton winning game 1 of the Stanley cup final
I need to catch up on squid game
