The Buzz #6:
The Met, Unfiltered
Now that I’ve had some time to let this year’s Met Gala sink in (psst, read my full review here if you haven’t!), I can honestly say that I am surprisingly happy with this year! While the overall lack of colour was a bit of a letdown (ugh!), most celebs came through with strong looks and thankfully, the fashion took center stage. But of course, there was still some drama, so let’s dive in.
Rihanna is glowing (again!)! The fashion icon (and arguably the queen of the Met) arrived in a tailored, suit-inspired gown that beautifully framed her growing baby bump. I’m always rooting for Rihanna and I love to see her thriving in this new chapter of life. She’s already confirmed that baby #3 will follow the same naming style as her last two (RZA, Riot…), so I’m very curious on what she will go with. But girl, we are never getting that album…
In a surprising twist, Zendaya had a twin at this year’s Met, with Anna Sawai showing up in nearly the exact same outfit. As the other queen of the Met, this was rather surprising. Zendaya is typically the never-been-done, always-the-moment type of attendee., so this felt…off. Even funnier was her stylist Law Roach’s reaction on the red carpet when he saw Anna Sawai. After a long, stunned stare, he laughingly shares, “who wore it better?!” and walks off. Law, with outfits that identical, I don’t think we can decide.
Doechii had her own headline moment, and not for the right reason. The rapper was caught on video snapping at her team after paparazzi caught a glimpse of her outfit before she hit the carpet. In the clip, Doechii is demanding more umbrellas so she can walk the infamous pre-Met walk (covered in umbrellas to shield the outfit). But the yelling? Not her best look. To her credit, Doechii clapped back with a Tik Tok saying “god forbid a girl needs more umbrellas”, giving props to her team’s hard work in the caption. I get it girl, it’s your first Met and you want the big moment, but is yelling really the answer?
God’s Plan But Make It Trending
The Conclave has officially happened, which post-Conclave, really just feels like a dramatic gossip session of “vote for your favourite church friend.” But here we are! We’ve got a new Pope: American-born Robert Prevost, now known to the world as Pope Leo XIV.
Now I’ll admit, a new Pope doesn’t exactly impact my day-to-day life. But what hit me during this Conclave is that this is the first papal election to take place since the rise of the internet. Pope Francis was chosen in March 2013, so we had early Instagram, but that is nothing like the Tik Tok frenzy we have today. The content? Unhinged. Glorious. And oh so funny.
One Tik Toker (@hearttherob) turned the entire event into a Real Housewives-style series, even using AI-generated images of the cardinals in gowns with their own taglines. I’ve also seen low key thirst traps of the Pope (yes, you read that right). I’m talking slow zooming images of Pope Leo to Nicki Minaj’s song Outta My Mind (where she says “Bob” profusely). And of course, Tik Tok detectives uncovered that Pope Leo (I wanna call him Bob now) had a situationship back in the day! No details but just enough vague info to make it suspicious. We’re all thinking the same thing here…but I guess we’ll never know.
It’s Finally Nia’s Turn!
As a lifelong Dance Moms watcher, this news has me so excited. Nia, one of the original dancers and the only one to stick it out for nearly the entire series, is releasing a book titled Bottom of the Pyramid in November 2025.
According to early teasers, this book will walk us through Nia’s Dance Moms journey, season by season, finally giving us her side of the story. And if you watched the show, you know exactly why this matters. Nia was consistently undervalued by Abby Lee Miller. Her treatment, especially as a young girl, was hard to watch then, and even harder to stomach now.
She’s promised “all the behind-the-scenes from the show, including the mental and verbal mistreatment from Abby”. And honestly, it’s time. The show may have made stars, but it also exposed the deeply toxic and traumatic environment that is high-level, competitive dance. Seeing Nia tell her truth and reclaim her fame is truly amazing, and I am just so excited for it. Go, Nia, go!
Keke’s Konfessions
Keke Palmer has returned to music, and is not shying away from the truth. Her latest track, My Confessions, is a R&B, Usher-inspired track that sets the record straight about that infamous tweet from Summer 2023.
If you’re not a chronically online person (congrats on your peace), let me give you the back story. Back in Summer 2023, Keke attended an Usher concert in Vegas with her gals. Videos circulated online of Keke dancing with the singer, wearing a sheer, sexy dress and living her best life. Her then boyfriend, Darius Jackson, tweeted “it’s her outfit tho, you a mom.” The internet exploded, and rightfully so. His comment sparked major backlash, with many calling out the controlling, sexist undertones. Fast forward to now, Keke finally shares her side.
Inspired by Usher’s own song Confessions, Keke reveals that her and Darius weren’t even together at the time of the concert. And even if the pair were together, she rightfully questions why he felt entitled to comment on her outfit and body.
It’s smart, it’s powerful, and it’s so amazing for Keke. Almost two years later, I love that she’s finally putting this story to rest, her way.
Are Rom Coms… Back?!
Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans walk into a room with a 2000s voiceover, and suddenly we’re asking… are rom coms back?!
A new trailer just dropped for Materialists, the long-awaited love triangle film starring the trio above, and it’s giving major early-2000s vibes. The editor made a bold choice (and nailed it) by adding a iconic throwback voice to the trailer. It’s How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days / He’s Just Not That Into You energy, and audiences are eating it up.
Behind the camera is Celine Song, fresh off the great success of her 2023 directorial debut Past Lives. This film is a heartbreaking, tender romance about the pulls of current versus past relationships, proving she knows how to handle love stories with nuance. We’ll have to wait for June 13 to see if her next film lives up to the hype, but based on the trailer? I’m feeling hopeful.
3 things that made me happy this week:
